The Power of (Gamma) GRL PWR
When I was in elementary school, I remember having writing prompts that would ask “if you could have any super power in the world, what would it be?” Now as a 20 year old college student, this question continues to come up in conversation. It remains one of the those silly questions that can somehow reveal a lot about a person with just a simple answer. I have always said my superpower would be the ability to stop time, because if time could stop with the snap of a finger, I could have more of it for myself and others.
While I was focused on finding powers that I don’t have, I never realized how many other powers I do have in my life. 15 years of my life were spent at an all girls Catholic school, where I graduated with 62 girls in my class. During those last 4 years, our bonds grew stronger and deeper with each other. Once I came to UD, I wanted to branch out from sisterhood, but still found myself wanting a little piece of it. In the Fall semester of 2017, I decided to join Gamma Sigma Sigma. I was only a sophomore at the time, but upon joining I was immediately in awe of how uplifting, positive, and generous the sisterhood was to everyone they interacted with. These were my kind of people and I could not have been more excited to get into unity and service.
If you asked me a couple years ago what my superpower would be, I would’ve said the ability to stop time. If you ask me what my superpower would be now, I would say that I already have the most important superpower: girl power. Girl power is knowing what you want, being fearlessly independent, and most importantly being comfortable with yourself. It isn’t about neglecting the men in your life, either. There are many girls I know who embody girl power and have multiple types of relationships with guys. We need to make sure to take care of ourselves and others always. There is beauty in being a force of feminine power and self awareness while maintaining those healthy relationships with others.
My time in Gamma Sig has provided me with countless examples of strong, powerful women, who constantly practice girl power. I joined with one of my very good friends, who showed me about self care and putting yourself first. I met my best friend, who puts her entire being into her passions and goes after her ambitions. My fam consists of the raddest and baddest girls I know, and I can always turn to them for sound support. The executive board shows graceful leadership everyday in and outside of Gamma Sig. Most importantly, all of my sisters exemplify girl power within themselves, and I continue to find sources of inspiration from them. Gamma Sigma Sigma is girl power. You are girl power. I am girl power, and there is no other power I need.
