#GSSTravels - Laura Mays' Adventures Abroad

Laura Mays, Beta Nu, shares her experiences in London, Scotland, Paris and beyond over winter session!

This picture is from my first weekend abroad after arriving in London. Myself and nine other people from my trip decided to spend the weekend in Amsterdam, exploring the canals, the art museums, the history and the quaint, charming culture. The city was really cool. There were bikes everywhere (literally, everywhere) and some of the buildings were even kind of crooked with so much character.

This picture was taken on December 30th, the day after my friend Megan Heston (Beta Xi) and I got to Scotland. Our study abroad program didn’t start until January 3rd, but we decided to go a few days early to visit Edinburgh and see the Scottish highlands. I am so incredibly glad we chose to go because Scotland was one of the most beautiful countries that I’ve ever seen, especially covered in snow. The mountains and “lochs” were absolutely amazing, and we even got to look around for the Loch Ness Monster here at Fort Augustus in the highlands!

After a few days in Scotland, Megan and I made our way to London, where we would be living for the next month. We were still there a couple of days earlier than everyone else, so we chose to explore the city a little bit on our own! Of course, one of the first places we had to go was Buckingham Palace, which is gorgeous at sunset (and, let’s be real, any other time, too). It was hard to get a picture of it in all of its glory, without, like, a million other people in it.

This is one of my favorite pictures that I took abroad! A bunch of us went out one day to Abbey Road to take this iconic picture and see the studio. I was such an amazing day. We spent probably around 45 minutes trying to get the perfect picture, amongst traffic (because a lot of cars actually drive down this road) and the crowd of people. Also, this day was the first time that the sun had come out since I was in London and it just made the entire day that much better.

After visiting Amsterdam, the same group of friends and I planned a trip to Paris! Paris was one of the most beautiful cities that I have ever been to; I was in complete awe the entire time. Pictured here is the moment I peaked: crepe in one hand, camera in the other and the Eiffel Tower right in front of me. Between that, Notre Dame, the Pantheon, Luxembourg Gardens, the Arc de Triomphe, and just about everything else there, Paris took my breath away over and over for the entire weekend.

This picture is from one of my last days in London, taken while on the London Eye. Studying abroad, in London specifically, was one of the best decisions of my college career and of my life so far. I learned so much about traveling, myself, and just life, in general, that I never could have discovered at home. I am so incredibly thankful that I had the opportunity to go and travel to places like London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Paris.
